RALEIGH — Campbell Law Professor Melissa A. Essary will present her most recent findings regarding federal employment cases in the state at the 34th annual North Carolina/South Carolina Labor and Employment Conference on Oct. 12-13, in Asheville.
Essary, who is the only law professor speaking at the event, will provide the audience with an update and analysis on all North Carolina federal district court employment cases decided within the past year. Her paper, “North Carolina Federal District Court Update: A Year in Review,” focuses on labor and employment law cases from Sept. 1, 2017, through Sept. 1, 2018.
“Employment Law continues to be one of the hottest growth areas in the law,” explains Professor Essary, former dean of Campbell Law School. “My work on this project started this past February and has continued to date.”
This is the second time Essary has presented at the conference, which is attended by hundreds of labor and employment law attorneys throughout the Carolinas. Essary joined Campbell Law School as its fourth dean in July 2006 following a 16-year career as a professor at Baylor University School of Law. Essary served as Campbell Law Dean for six years before moving into a full-time faculty position in July 2012.
Following graduating magna cum laude from the Baylor University School of Law, she served as a trial lawyer for two Texas firms, most notably the Vinson and Elkins firm of Dallas, where she litigated complex commercial cases.
The American Bar Association (ABA) regularly appoints Essary to serve as the chair of reaccreditation site teams that visit other law schools. She is in her second term on the Finance and Legal Affairs Committee of the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC). The North Carolina Chief Justice appointed her to serve as a member of the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission. She serves as the academic liaison on the Council of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA). She also she serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the N.C. Justice Center.
