RALEIGH — Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard announced today that McGuire Woods has offered to financially sponsor two teams of law student advocates at the American Bar Association’s (ABA) National Appellate Advocacy Competition on March 7-9 in Washington, D.C.
“McGuire Woods has financially paved the way for our student advocates so many times in recent years, and we are blessed to enjoy our relationship with them,” said Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. “Their gifts provide the opportunity for our students to learn, get competitive experience, and show the rest of the country how our first-class advocacy program is molding the future leading attorneys of tomorrow. We are in debt to them for their generosity.”
Second-year students Morgan Welge, Brooke Weber, and Patrick Cook form one team, which is coached by Richard Waugaman, a 2012 Campbell Law graduate and attorney at Lesnik Family Law P.C.
The other team, made up of second-year students Jennifer Davis, Brittany Levine, and third-year student Maurizo Lewis-Streit, are coached by Professor Robert Montgomery.
The ABA Law Student Division National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC) is a moot court competition that emphasizes the development of oral advocacy skills through a realistic appellate advocacy experience. Moot court competitors participate in a hypothetical appeal to the United States Supreme Court. The competition involves writing a brief as either respondent or petitioner and then arguing the case in front of the mock court. Each team consists of two or three JD candidates attending the same ABA-approved law school. The regional competition consists of three qualifying rounds with each team arguing at least once on behalf of the respondent and the petitioner.

Terrence M. Bagley is a 1982 graduate of Campbell Law and served as chairman of the law school’s Board of Visitors from 2012 to 2018. He is former deputy managing partner of McGuireWoods and former chairman of the firm’s litigation department. His practice focuses on products liability, toxic tort, and commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in defending clients in automotive, power products, and asbestos litigation. He has litigated throughout the United States and has tried products cases to verdict in state and federal courts. He has also argued cases in state and federal courts of appeal. He has served as national and regional counsel in mass tort cases, including cases pending before various multidistrict litigation (MDL) courts.
