Campbell Law student spends spring break volunteering at immigration detention center

While some law students took a cruise or headed to the Outer Banks for a few days of rest and relaxation last week, Jaqui Murillo Figueroa, a third-year student at Campbell Law School, spent her Spring Break volunteering with Durham-based Polanco Law, P.C. in Lumpkin, Georgia.

Lumpkin is home to the Stewart Detention Center, the largest immigration detention center east of the Mississippi River. Figueroa spent each day visiting the detention center alongside attorney Marty Rosenbluth, the only private immigration attorney in town.

“In the mornings, I observed court proceedings including Master Hearings and Bond Hearings,” Figueroa explained. “In the afternoons, I along with Alondra Torres, Mr. Rosenbluth’s legal assistant, went on client visits in the Detention Center.”

Figueroa said her experience has been both eye-opening and life-changing in many ways.

“First and foremost, this was my first time ever going into an Immigration Court,” she explained. “Witnessing the dynamics of Immigration Court has been eye opening in numerous ways. Second, being in Lumpkin has solidified my interest in Removal Defense in the near future. Lastly, I am beyond thankful for Polanco Law, P.C’s work in Lumpkin and the passion and dedication that the whole team demonstrates in fully and effectively representing all clients.”
