Fred Wells Brason II will be the keynote speaker for the 9th Annual IPE Health Sciences Symposium on April 10 from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Leon Levine Hall of Medical Sciences. He is the founding president/CEO of Project Lazarus, a community-based model for preventing overdose, presenting responsible pain management, and promoting substance use treatment and support services. Project Lazarus serves various parts of the U.S., including military and tribal groups.
Mr. Brason will share with us about the work of Project Lazarus and the title of his presentation is Project Lazarus: Local Solutions to National Opioid Crisis; What Needs to be Known. Project Lazarus is instrumental in reducing medication and drug overdoses, emergency department visits for substance use and enhancing substance use treatment and support services.
“We welcome Mr. Brason’s knowledge and expertise concerning the opioid crisis and look forward to his address,” said K. Paige D. Brown (PharmD ’06), assistant dean of Interprofessional Education. “It will be very beneficial for our students, faculty and staff to hear first-hand about local efforts in rural North Carolina to combat this epidemic.”
Brason has served on FDA scientific workshop committees for the role of naloxone in opioid overdose fatality prevention and Assessment of Analgesic Treatment of Chronic Pain, additionally presented and testified at numerous FDA Hearings, Co-Chaired the Expert Committee for the formulation of the SAMHSA Overdose Toolkit and Project Lazarus has been highlighted in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Strategies. US DHHS Healthy 2020 has featured Project Lazarus as a community organization addressing the opioid crisis. Mr. Brason serves on the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatrists Steering Committee.
He has published articles in the North Carolina Medical Journal, Wiley Periodicals, the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, and the Journal of the North Carolina Medical Board.
Brason received the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leader Award 2012 and has been inducted into their Alumni Network.
