BUIES CREEK — Tony Cartledge, professor of Old Testament at the Campbell University Divinity School, wrote “a prayer for North Carolina” that appears in the December issue of Our State magazine.
He was among several religious scholars and members of the clergy whom the magazine asked to submit an essay on the subject of “a prayer for North Carolina” for the December issue. The publication has also developed an accompanying website that includes a video interview and audio of the authors reading their essays.
“I was gratified by the opportunity to contribute an essay about my hopes and prayers for North Carolina,” Cartledge said. “I love our state, which is so richly blessed with natural beauty and amazing people, but I am deeply concerned about the direction its current leadership has taken. I hope my essay, in some small way, may encourage others to keep the faith and work toward a more progressive society in North Carolina.”
Our State’s December issue will ship to subscribers on Nov. 15 and be on newsstands Dec. 2.
Cartledge has taught Old Testament, writing and ministry courses at the Campbell Divinity School since 2007. He is the sole author of hundreds of news, feature or scholarly articles and six books (“Vows in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East,” “1& 2 Samuel,” “Intrigued, How I Love to Proclaim It,” “Tall Tales and Deep Truths, “Sessions with Genesis,” and “Sessions with Samuel”). He’s also the co-author of “A Whole New World: Life after Bethany,” “Job: Into the Fire, Out of the Ashes,” and “I’m in Cells: the Captivating Story of Bob Barker and the Bob Barker Company.”
In addition to teaching at Campbell, Cartledge is contributing editor to Baptists Today and writes a weekly Sunday school curriculum called “Nurturing Faith.” He previously was the editor/president of the Biblical Recorder and served as a pastor of five churches, including 10 years as pastor of Woodhaven Baptist Church near Apex and Cary, N.C.
Cartledge graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1973 and earned a number of academic awards while completing a Master of Divinity degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1982). He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern studies from Duke University (1989).
