Campbell’s PGA students win Jones Cup again

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Five students in Campbell University’s PGA Golf Management University Program shot a 569 total over two rounds on Nov. 13 and 14 at the PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course to win the 11th PGA Jones Cup by a commanding 17 strokes. It’s the third time in six years that students in the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business program have won the PGA Jones Cup, which is presented by Golf Pride.

Campbell also won the Jones Cup in 2007 and 2009. Only one other school has won three titles; Mississippi State University did so in 2002, 2003 and 2010.

“They knew they would play well, and it didn’t surprise them,” Ken Jones, Campbell’s director of the PGA Golf Management University Program, told PGA.com. “This is a special event and to win the national championship for PGA Golf Management University Programs is really exciting.”

First held in 2002, the 36-hole event features the top five players from each of the 20 schools that operate a PGA Golf Management University program. The five students who represented Campbell were sophomore Robert Bose of Norfolk, Va. ; senior Charles Gross of Fayetteville; senior Jared Morrow of Charlotte; senior Ben Pollard of Bloomington, Minn.; and senior Ryan Wolff of Shokan, N.Y. They shot a 1-under-par 287 in the opening round on Tuesday, Nov. 13, and 6-under-par 282 on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Among the teams, New Mexico State University finished second; the University of Central Oklahoma third; and North Carolina State University, the 2011 champions, fourth.

Wolff shot two rounds of 70 to pace Campbell and to be the top individual medalist among all 100 golfers. Pollard tied for second.

“It was a great day and a lot of fun, but the most important part is that we are bringing the Jones Cup back home,” Wolff told PGA.com. “We came here with a great team, and we were very confident.”

Students in the PGA Golf Management program study both golf and business-related subjects and complete at least 16 months’ worth of internships at golf courses, preparing the students to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to become a PGA professional.
