Campbell honors MLK Day with Week of Service

BUIES CREEK – A week-long tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will kick off on Jan. 16 at Campbell University and will include several events where students and faculty can give back to the community.

Campus Minister Rev. Faithe Beam said Campbell’s fifth annual MLK Week of Service – formerly just the Day of Service – is not only a fitting tribute to King’s legacy, but will also fit in with the University’s focus on community service during its 125th anniversary.

“(The Week of Service) empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community,” Beam said.

The week will begin with a blood drive in the Rumley Center from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 16. On Jan. 17, the Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell will lead a service at Butler Chapel.

Girton-Mitchell is the director of the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Education, where she engages community-based organizations – both faith-based and secular – in building a culture of high expectations and support for education. She also works as part of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships to implement its mission in cooperation with the Centers for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships at 12 other federal agencies.

Girton-Mitchell will also speak on Jan. 18 for Campbell University Worship.
