Buies Creek, N.C.—The story of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection is the theme of the Campbell University Choral Society’s prelude to Easter concert featuring members of the Campbell community and the University String Ensemble. The concert is set for Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
The program consists of works related to the Nativity, Passover and Holy Week, said Choral Director Dr. Phillip Morrow.
“It begins withthe song of the angels at Jesus’ birth and ends with a setting of Psalms 6—texts which would have been appropriate for the disciples to sing at the Last Supper,”Morrow said.
Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” is first on the program followed by an instrumental interlude, “Adagio for Strings,” by American composer Samuel Barber. “Psalms of the Passover,” a modern piece in four movements by composer Ed Lojeski, highlights the program finale.
Numerous solos feature Campbell students, most of whom are majoring in vocal music. The ‘Gloria’ has movements for soprano duet, contralto and mezzo-soprano, while the ‘Psalms’ piece features a bass solo and a vocal quartet. The String Ensemble is directed by Pamela Kelly, Strings Coordinator for Campbell’s Department of Music.
“I am excited to highlight the good work of our students on this concert,” Morrow said. “Mrs. Kelly does an outstanding job with the Strings and these student soloists will have an outstanding opportunity to shine on Sunday.”
The Campbell University Choral Society is a community-based ensemble comprised of undergraduate students, University community persons, faculty and graduate students.
