Campbell professor to lead free diabetes workshop

Benson, N.C.-Dr. Jennifer Smith, assistant professor with Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a clinical pharmacy practitioner with the Wilson Community Health Center, will lead a free workshop for people with diabetes on Tuesday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Benson Civic Center.

The workshop is sponsored by global pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. and Healthyi, a health education and engagement company that promotes better health through a series of face-to-face sessions with sufferers of chronic diseases such as diabetes. The programs encourage patients to relate what they learn to their own experiences and make plans to put that learning to work in their everyday lives.

“Being told you have diabetes can leave you with a lot of questions,” said Smith. “We hear a lot about diabetes in the community and it isn’t all correct.”

Smith, who graduated from Campbell in 2002, will guide the discussion on a variety of topics, including how to manage diabetes and plan meals better; facts and myths about diabetes; managing blood sugar, and conditions that affect blood sugar rates.
