Buies Creek, N.C.-Fresh from performances in four of North Carolina most vibrant cities, the Campbell University Choir will return to its own turf to end its concert tour at the Anna Gardner and Robert B. Butler Chapel. Celebrating the Lenten season, the concert is set for Tuesday, March 30 at 8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
From 16th century composers like Felix Mendelssohn to the contemporary works of Leonard Bernstein, the late director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the program represents numerous time periods and geographic locations.
“Program highlights include a stunning setting of ‘Somewhere’ from ‘West Side Story,’ and ‘Elijah Rock,’ a rousing spiritual by Moses Hogan” said Dr. Phillip Morrow, conductor of the choir.
Works by other composers such as Hans Leo Hassler, Alice Parker and Arvo Pärt are also included. Rebekah Billheimer, a junior from Cary, N.C., is the choir’s student conductor this semester. She will conduct a movement from John Rutter’s “Requiem.” Other student soloists include Katie Andrews, Brandon Mock and Mary Somerville. Anna Hobgood, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., is accompanist for the choir.
“It is particularly exciting for us to be performing our spring concert in the chapel,” said Morrow. “We love to sing in Scott Concert Hall, but this exciting new venue has a fine acoustic for singing and is stunningly beautiful. I think the artistic beauty of the chapel itself will enhance our program of choral music in a meaningful way.”
