RALEIGH – Campbell Law School Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced Nicholas Sanders will join the Office of Career and Professional Development on July 10, 2023, as Director of Externships.
In his new role, Sanders will also serve as an adjunct faculty member. He is charged with overseeing the teaching and administration of the law school’s robust externship program throughout the year – fall, spring and summer.
“With his background as special deputy attorney general for the North Carolina Department of Justice and as a judicial law clerk for the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Nick brings a wealth of experience to his new role,” Leonard said. “I look forward to working with him to bring our already extensive externship program to the next level.”
Campbell Law’s Externship program is large and well developed, with more than 250 sites, serving more than 85% of the student population. The director provides oversight of field placements for academic credit, ensuring the compliance of American Bar Association (ABA) accrediting standards and regularly teaches the classroom components and other related workshops.
The director, as a member of the Career Center staff, works closely with other staff to perform the critical functions of the career center, including counseling of diverse students and alumni, special programming and outreach to potential employers and administration, in a fast-paced, service-oriented, student-focused office.
Prior to joining Campbell Law, Sanders served as a Special Deputy Attorney General in the Appellate and Post-Conviction Section since December 2022 and an Assistant Attorney General in the same section since October 2019. He also served as a judicial law clerk from August 2018 to September 2019 in the North Carolina Court of Appeals. While in law school, he worked as an intern or extern for the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, the Durham County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
A 2018 graduate of Duke University School of Law, Sanders also earned a Certificate in Public Interest and Public Service Law. While in law school he served as co-editor-in-chief of the Duke Journal of Gender Law and Policy; vice president of the Government and Public Service Society; and alumni donations coordinator for the Public Interest Law Foundation. He earned a bachelor of arts magna cum laude in political science in 2015 from the College of Charleston, where he minored in Crime, Law and Society and served as captain of the mock trial team.
