Former Army chaplain speaks on counseling experiences related to PTSD

Buies Creek, N.C.—Former Army chaplain retired Lt. Col. James D. Johnson will be the keynote speaker for Campbell University’s annual Friends of the Library dinner and meeting on Friday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Room of Marshbanks Dining Hall. Johnson will speak on his experiences counseling victims of combat trauma during a 20-year Army career.

A graduate of Wake Forest University, Johnson received a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Science degree in counseling from Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y. He went on to earn a doctorate in Marriage and Family counseling in 1994.

He has served as Minister of Counseling at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville since 1990. As an Army chaplain from 1996-1986, Johnson served as Senior Supervisory Chaplain and Staff Chaplain at numerous Army posts including Ft. Liberty, 1st Corps Support Command and Womack Army Hospital, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, two Air Defense Battalions in Germany and as a Prison Chaplain at Ft. Bliss Stockade in Texas. He has also pastored churches in Lilesville and Norwood, North Carolina.

He is the author of the book “Combat Chaplain: A Thirty Year Vietnam Battle,” published by the University of North Texas Press and nominated for the Military Historical Society’s Distinguished Book Award for 2001.

Highly decorated for valor, Johnson received three Bronze Stars and five Meritorious Service Awards, among numerous others. He has also performed missions work in Africa, Albania, the Czech Republic and other locations.
