Campbell alumna Deborah Holloway will never forget the friendship and guidance she received from fellow alumnus Warren Trent Strickland and his wife Clara. To honor that relationship, Holloway and husband Dennis have established the Warren Trent and Clara Greene Strickland endowed Scholarship Fund. Although Strickland graduated from Campbell College 33 years before Holloway received her Campbell degree in Religion and Christian Ministries in 2006, their paths crossed while Holloway was attending Richmond Community College. Trent was responsible for helping Holloway obtain her first job in ministry and Clara, who taught English courses at Richmond Community College, encouraged Holloway to continue her education beyond a two-year degree. Today, Holloway is an ordained minister and is currently enrolled in a master’s program in church leadership at Liberty University. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to award one or more scholarships each school year to a student or students who demonstrate financial need and are majoring in religion, with plans to go into full time Christian service. The student must be enrolled full-time and may apply each year if his or her cumulative grade point average is 2.5 or higher.Trent Strickland, who is retired, served in the Peace Corps from 1963-1965 in Uruguay. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Campbell College in 1963 in education and a master’s degree from Appalachian State University in 1969. He went on to earn a doctorate in adult education in 1990 from North Carolina State University. He is president of the Carolina chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. Clara Strickland graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College with honors in 1963 and received a master’s degree in English from Appalachian in 1968. She taught high school and college English for 25 years. They reside in Hamlet, N.CDeborah and Dennis Holloway reside in Rockingham, N.C.
