Secretary of State Elaine Marshall will be the featured speaker for Campbell University’s Leadership lecture series, a component of the School of Education’s Teaching Fellows program. Marshall will speak on Monday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. in Taylor Hall on the Campbell campus. Admission is free and open to the public.Elected North Carolina Secretary of State in 1997, Marshall also served as a senator from North Carolina’s 15th District and as Harnett County Democratic Party chair. She graduated from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in 1981 and was a partner in the law firm of Marshall & Marshall in Lillington, N.C. Since being elected Secretary, Marshall has received numerous honors, including honorary doctoral degrees from Meredith and Lees-McRae colleges, the P.K. Agarwal Leadership Award, the National Notary Association Achievement Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Business. In 2004, she received the Women in Business Award from the Triangle Business Journal and the Distinguished Attorney Award from the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys.In 2006, Campbell University was selected as one of four new institutions out of a total of 13 to participate in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program which is designed to attract high caliber students into the teaching profession. Funded by the General Assembly, the program awards $6,500 per year for four years to students who will major in education and agree to teach at least four years in a North Carolina public school. The qualifications for becoming a Teaching Fellow and hosting a Teaching Fellows program are stringent, including providing a Leadership lecture series that brings business, education and political leaders to campus.Future speakers in the Leadership series include; Dr. Edward Fubara, director of the MBA Program at Campbell University (Oct. 8); and James Bell (Nov. 5), a middle school teacher and the North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
