Earn door prizes, Blue Cross Blue points and a healthy, happier lifestyle. Get out and move with Campbell University’s new walking program, the Healthy Camels Caravan. The walking contest, which kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and goes through Friday, Nov. 16, is open to faculty and staff on each of the Campbell campuses. Participants can walk as teams or as individuals over a centrally located one-mile, half-mile or quarter-mile trail that has been marked for convenience. Total time walked, recorded on logs to be turned in each week, will determine the winners of the contest, and prizes will be presented in November. Contestants may also walk at home or on a treadmill.Emily Bloom, a member of the Healthy Camels Committee, said the main objective of the program is to get people moving.”If you can walk 10 minutes and you haven’t walked in 10 years, then that’s something new,” said Bloom, associate director of the Science Education Outreach program at the Campbell School of Pharmacy. “If you want to set a goal to walk three times a week and meet it, then you can set a new goal to walk four times a week. The important thing is to take that first step.” According to Bloom, the committee’s ultimate goal is for people to realize that they do have time to fit walking into their lifestyle. “I hope that they will see a change from the first week to the last week,” she said. “I hope that they will feel so much better.”The trails were marked by Bloom’s son, John Michael Bloom, as part of an Eagle Scout project.
