“Proven honest, fair, hard working, conservative and tough on crime,” boasted the committee to re-elect Mark Klass for Superior Court judge. The winning campaign landed Campbell alumni Mark Klass the seat of Superior Court judge for the 22nd Judicial District, a title he has defended since 1998.”Campbell University did an excellent job in teaching me how to be a professional lawyer. I was provided the foundation and skills necessary to be a successful general practitioner for twelve years,” said Klass. “I was able to take these skills and apply them to my current position of Superior Court Judge.”Klass also credits his success to his family. He says his biggest influences came from his grandparents, who were all “hard-working people.” Undoubtably, Klass also draws inspiration from his father Jack Klass, who has served as District Court judge for the past six years and has practiced law for more years than he can count. Like father, like son. Together, the father and son pair is the second to hold judgeships at the same time in North Carolina since the early 1800’s.Mark Klass’ success in government and law is a far cry from his high school dreams of becoming a professional football player. After a shoulder injury foiled his pro-sports plans, he looked to his father’s example. Klass received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his law degree at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.In 1986, Klass worked as an assistant district attorney under Butch Zimmerman. A year later, he joined his father’s law practice. It was during that time that he met his wife Becky, whom he was introduced to on a blind date and married in September 1996.Since then, Klass has worn the hats of both lawyer and judge and has been doing what he says the job is all about—helping people.”I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained at Campbell University and the experience I developed in private practice toward my judicial philosophy,” said Klass. “I approach each case with an open mind; judge impartially and fairly; and issue decisions based upon the law and the facts.”Klass resides in Lexington, NC with his wife Becky. They have one daughter, Ellie, and two dogs, Chloe and Memphis.
