Court of Appeals Judge Ann Marie Calabria was presented with the 2007 James Iredell Award by Campbell University’s chapter of the Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity on Feb. 21, 2007 at the North Carolina Bar Center. The award is given each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to the legal profession and to the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law. Calabria, a distinguished alumna from the Campbell Law School Class of 1983, served two terms as a Wake County district court judge before her appointment to the Court of Appeals in 2003. During her time as district court judge, Calabria received national recognition for establishing an innovative sentencing program for non-English speaking defendants charged with non-violent misdemeanors and infractions.Calabria credits her legal training at Campbell University for preparing her for a lifetime of public service. “I have tried to use the skills I gained during law school to improve the public’s perception of attorneys and judges while helping residents of our state to resolve their disputes peacefully,” said Calabria. “I am very proud of the professors, staff, students and alumni of Campbell University and I am truly grateful to be associated with this exceptional institution.”Judge Calabria’s dedication to the law and commitment to the citizens of the state have earned the respect of fellow judges in the state, including former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Robert F. Orr. “I was delighted to learn that the Court of Appeals started a volunteer mediation program to mediate each other’s cases,” said Orr. “Judge Calabria became a certified member and has successfully mediated most of the casts assigned to her in the last three years.” In 2003, Calabria was presented with the Distinguished Alumna Award for her contributions to Campbell University.Campbell University School of Law is a highly demanding, purposely small, intensely personal community of faculty and students whose aim, guided by transcendent values, is to develop lawyers who possess moral conviction, social compassion, and professional competence and who view the practice of law as a calling to serve others and to create a more just society.
