Campbell University’s School of Pharmacy held its annual Career Fair in Morrisville on January 12, 2006.Representatives from 51 top companies from around the Southeast, including Harris Teeter, Walgreens and Glaxo Smith-Kline, attended the day long event, talking with students and offering literature about their respective companies. Recruiters conducted on-site interviews and presentations to prospective employees.Qualified pharmacists are in high demand across North Carolina and across the country, creating fierce competition among employers. According to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, there will be a predicted shortfall of nearly 157,000 pharmacists in the United States by 2020.Danielle Saraceno, Coordinator for Student Services and Admissions in the Pharmacy School, says the Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for businesses to make a lasting impression with students.”It gives them an opportunity to have one on one contact with the students in a more casual atmosphere,” she said. “There are only 3 pharmacy schools in North Carolina. They try to target the students that will stay [in the state] in hopes that they will come to work for their company.”Saraceno says the Career Fair also gives pharmacy students a better understanding of the types of work they can do with their education.”Once these students go on rotation their fourth year, they get exposed to the many opportunities available to pharmacists,” she said.In the last twenty years, Campbell’s Pharmacy program has gained a national reputation for producing qualified pharmacists. In June 2006, students from the School of Pharmacy maintained the school’s unparalleled passage rate by again posting 100 percent on the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy’s Practical Exam. That is the 12th time the school has scored 100 percent since it was founded in 1986.
