Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cooper, of Lumberton, N.C., have made a major gift toward the construction of the Campbell University’s John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. The $30 million dollar cultural and athletic facility is expected to be completed in 2008. Married over 60 years, Howard and Eva Cooper have been generous friends of Campbell University. They have established two endowed scholarships, the Howard and Eva Cooper Law Endowed Scholarship and the Meader Williams Harriss III Law Scholarship in honor of their grandson who graduated from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, and their generosity has helped support the D. Rich Memorial building renovation and numerous other capital campaigns. Cooper is also a member of Campbell’s Presidential Board of Advisors. A retired farmer, merchant and real estate developer, Howard Cooper received one of Campbell’s highest honors, the Presidential Medallion. He has been active in civic life, serving as a member of the Lumberton City Council, the Lumberton City Board of Education, the Robeson County Board of Commissioners (chairman) and the Lumberton Committee of 100, among other responsibilities.
