Campbell University holds Pharmacy Alumni and Friends Golf Classic

Finally the sun began to peak through the clouds and the rain held off as the School of Pharmacy hosted its biggest Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament to date recently at the Keith Hills Golf Course in Lillington. “We are truly excited by the outcome of the event,” said Jodi S. Peeler, Director of Alumni Relations. “Thanks to the continued support of our contributors the Betty M. Wallace Student Center will become a reality.” The Campbell University School of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association hosts an annual golf classic to assist with the advancement of the pharmacy school. This year, over $12,000 was raised to benefit the Betty M. Wallace Student Commons Area in the new pharmacy building. This student center will provide much needed space for student socialization, interaction, grabbing a snack between classes or simply relaxing with classmates. Due to growing enrollment numbers, the School of Pharmacy has a need for space. Classrooms are at full capacity; students must be split into separate rooms to take an exam, and the lecture halls (both Hartness and Sauls) are at their maximum capacity. The labs are a bit dated and too small for a large number of students. Several sections must be taught to allow students the opportunity to gain ample lab instruction. Thanks to funds raised by events like the Alumni and Friends Golf Classic, help is on the way. “When choosing this year’s benefit for the pharmacy golf tournament, the Betty M. Wallace Student Commons Area was an easy decision,” explained Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the School of Pharmacy. “We are excited to open the doors to the new building next fall so we can continue to educate more competent, qualified leaders within the pharmacy profession.” The tournament began with a light breakfast sponsored by Aramark. Directly before the shot gun start, Maddox welcomed everyone to the event and thanked them for their ongoing support of the School of Pharmacy. Jodi Peeler, director of Alumni Relations, concluded the welcome by thanking all the golfers for their participation as the volunteers for their assistance with the tournament. After their round of golf, participants enjoyed a lunch sponsored by the N.C. Cattlemen’s Association, Andy’s of Lillington, Carlie C’s IGA and Aramark. Dr. Dennis Bazemore, vice president for Student Life at Campbell University, grilled steak sandwiches for lunch. He was able to cook all the meat and clean up just before the rain started to pour. Once all the golfers completed all 18 holes, final scores were tallied and the winners were announced. First and second place were awarded to the top two teams in flights 1 and 2. Receiving first place from flight 1 was Carroll Pharmacy. Members on the team included Alan Carroll (’05), Derek Wallace, George Fisher and Evan McDonald (’05). Team Cardinal Health took home first place from flight 2. Members on the team included Jeff Pendergrass (’90), Todd King (’90) and Glenn McDonald (’07). Second place from flight 1 was awarded to the New Century Bank/NC Bank Mortgage team with members David Stephens, Glenn McFayden, James Harris and Darrell Fowler. Flight 2 second place recipients were Richard Flye, Brad Holland, Dee Holland and Mark Moore (’00). Alan Carroll (’05) won the longest drive competition and Craig Frith took home the prize for closest to the pin. The grand prize drawing for the Holland Stainless Steel Legacy Series Grill was the conclusion to the awards ceremony at the golf classic. Nearly 300 tickets were sold for $10.00 a piece to raise just under $3,000 for the Betty M. Wallace Student Commons Area. The approximate retail value of the grill is $1,200. The first name drawn was Gabrielle Morgan of Buies Creek, N.C. entitling her to the Holland Grill. Randy Scott of Buies Creek, N.C. won the second prize, a $250 gift certificate to Kroger. The third ticket was awarded to Donna Phelps of Rocky Mount, N.C., a 20″ Flat Color Stereo Television provided by Microtel Inns & Suites. Several other prizes were awarded to ticket holders. Construction of the new pharmacy facility is scheduled to be completed in November 2006. Following the completion, faculty and staff will move into the new facility and the hope is to have an official open house in January 2007. We hope all our contributors will be able to join us for this event. If you’re interested in finding out more about how to support the Betty M.
