Gore to chair non-profit foundation for Campbell University

Campbell Alumnus and Trustee Ed Gore, of Sunset Beach, N.C. was selected to chair a non-profit foundation established by Campbell University. The foundation is dedicated to raising and managing private support for the university. The officers and directors or trustees of the foundation are chosen by the university’s Board of Trustees and the relationship of the foundation to the university is comparable to that of a subsidiary and parent corporation. “The foundation gives another dimension to giving to the university in that it crosses denominational lines and offers another tool that we anticipate will have tremendous impact on fulfilling the mission of Campbell University—to produce Christian entrepreneurs, ministers, teachers and other professionals,” said Gore. In addition to the usual types of gifts, the foundation is authorized to receive gifts of property, Campbell Vice President and Treasurer Jim Roberts, explained. “We are excited about the possibilities this new venue will create,” he said. In setting up the foundation, Gore said the university will follow a sound business model that will produce a lot of flexibility across the entire spectrum of charitable giving. “It will also open the door for other university schools such as pharmacy and divinity to establish foundations,” Gore said. “Not every one is called by the Holy Spirit to make charitable contributions. This model will appeal to those who may not have been ‘called,’ but still want to give.” To date the foundation has received three major gifts, each going toward the construction of Campbell’s John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. All gifts and income to the foundation are to be used exclusively by Campbell University. Campbell Trustee Ed Byrd serves as vice chair of the foundation. Gore graduated from Campbell College in 1952 and went on to earn a degree in business from East Carolina University in 1955. He joined his father Mannon C. Gore, the founder of Sunset Beach and Twin Lakes, Inc., to become a second-generation developer of Sunset Beach. Gore and his wife Dinah funded the 3,000-seat arena for Campbell’s John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center, expected to be completed in 2008. The arena will be named for their late son, Gilbert Craig Gore.
