There’s more to Campbell University’s faculty and staff than what you see in the classroom and meeting rooms. Their hidden talents will be on full display Friday at the first Talent Showcase, which will cap off this week’s two-day Faculty & Staff Orientation.
The event — which will include performances and an art gallery — will begin at 3 p.m. Friday in the Oscar N. Harris Student Union’s Keith Family Ballroom.
The Showcase was the brainchild of Lori Barefoot, executive assistant in the Office of the President, who said she’s met many “really gifted” Campbell employees over the years, and she wanted to share their gifts with the community.
“I think a lot of our colleagues enjoy building community and relationships on campus, but we have not really had a lot of opportunity to do so for quite some time,” she said. “This seemed like a fun and inexpensive way to bring people together and just enjoy each other. I’m thrilled that faculty and staff seem to be here for it.”
The Showcase will include 14 performances, ranging from magic to baton twirling, music and poetry to stand-up comedy. There will also be roughly a dozen pieces on display in an art gallery.
There will be no judges or “best of” prizes, as it’s more of a showcase than a contest, says Barefoot, who will also perform and share artwork on Friday. All participants will receive VIP passes to a home football game of their choice and can join President and Mrs. Downs in the stadium suite for the game.
“We talked about doing prizes, but I honestly am just so excited that we’ve got good participation and that people are willing to bravely share special gifts that help make them who they are,” Barefoot said.
