RALEIGH, N.C. –Campbell Law School will host a full-day Gideon v. Wainwright Symposium on Friday, March 8, as the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) commemorate the 50thanniversary of the landmark case.
In Gideon v. Wainwright the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment requires state courts to provide counsel in criminal cases for defendants who cannot afford their own legal representation. The symposium will explore ways to improve indigent defense in North Carolina.
Speakers will include George Hausen, Darryl Hunt, and Mark Rabil. Hausen will speak on the civil aspects of Gideon v. Wainwright, while Hunt and Rabil will discuss the case from the client’s perspective. The court’s perspective will be offered by a variety of Superior Court and District Court judges in attendance.
