RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law Professor Charlie Lewis was recently awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during a meeting of the North Carolina General Statutes Commission. Professor Lewis is retiring this week from Campbell Law School after 34 years, and will step aside from the commission at the end of May.
At the meeting, Professor Lewis was presented with an official certificate signed by North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue evidencing the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
“I am deeply humbled and appreciative of receiving such a high honor from the state of North Carolina,” said Lewis. “As is the case with my tenure at Campbell Law, serving on the North Carolina General Statues Commission has been a wonderful experience, and has been extremely rewarding on both personal and professional levels. I am truly honored by this recognition.”
Professor Lewis served for 25 years on the North Carolina General Statutes Commission, an appointed commission charged with the responsibility of advising the North Carolina General Assembly on suggested updates and revisions to the North Carolina General Statutes. Professor Lewis, who previously served six years as vice-chair of the commission, is in his 10th year as chairman.
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is one of the highest honors the governor can bestow upon a citizen of North Carolina. It is typically presented to outstanding North Carolinians with a significant record of service to the state. Past recipients include Maya Angelou, The Reverend Billy Graham, Coretta Scott King, and Senator Robert Morgan.
