Campbell’s PGY1 residency program based at East Carolina University’s Department of Family Medicine was awarded reaccreditation through 2014 by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
The one-year program trains residents with advanced skills and knowledge to provide pharmacotherapy for adult patients with multiple chronic diseases. The University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) accepts one resident each year for the program. The resident completes clinical rotations in a nursing home, geriatric clinic and at the Department of Family Medicine. Care for the geriatric patient population is emphasized throughout the residency.
Ann Marie Nye, PharmD, associate professor of pharmacy practice, has directed the residency program since 2002 and was instrumental in the reaccreditation process.
The College’s first geriatric residency was offered in 1990 and a total of 13 residents have completed the program. From 1997-2005, the residency was accredited through ASHP as a specialty program in geriatric pharmacy practice. The program was converted in 2006 to a PGY1 residency with an emphasis in geriatric care.
