BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Adam Smith Club at Campbell Business School hosted its first political debate in Turner Auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The debate catered to the diversity of the student population and was open to all political parties. Representatives from the Republican, Libertarian, Democratic, and Independent parties participated in the debate.
“Freedom of speech is absolutely necessary in a free society,” said Campbell Business Lundy Chair Dr. Boris Abbey. “Universities across the nation are under siege by students and faculty who are trying to undermine our fundamental right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. The fact that we had a civil debate on sensitive issues speaks volumes about the strong character and integrity of Campbell’s students.”
Questions were submitted by Campbell University students. Students, who also served as moderators, helped organize the event to simulate the conversation. Topics covered included economic policy, cyber ethics, the social justice movement, and the Syrian refuge crisis. More than 150 members of the community attended the debate.
The event triggered massive social media attention on campus. The websites Yik Yak and Twitter allowed students to interact online, which provided a spirited cyber debate providing critical feedback and a lively discussion on who won the debate.
“It was profound to see so many students get involved and share their opinions or personal experiences,” said Libertarian Party representative Christopher West. “I would definitely recommend continuing this fun, educational, and socially engaging experience in the coming years. This debate was exactly what students needed to feel involved in the political process.”
Several students have requested another political debate be held next semester, as well as debates on special topics of interest. The Lundy Chair and Adam Smith Club have committed themselves to support more debates and welcome collaboration throughout the entire university to sponsor future events.
