RALEIGH, N.C. – Second-year Campbell Law students Zachary Anstett and Peter Borden recently took second overall in the American Bar Association (ABA) Client Counseling Competition regional finals in Charlotte. The pair was coached by Campbell Law Professor Melissa Essary and Restorative Justice Clinic Director Jon Powell.
“As second-year students, Peter and Zac exhibited empathy, confidence, and competence, all trademarks of great lawyers,” said Essary. “Professor Powell and I look forward to all that Zac and Peter will accomplish in their remaining time as law students, and ultimately, as Campbell lawyers.“

Eleven teams from six law schools across four states formed the competitive field at the competition, with each team competing in three preliminary rounds. Six teams then advanced to the semifinals. Following a four-way tie, a tie breaker placed Anstett and Borden in fourth place, and they in turn defeated the third place team to advance to the final round of three teams.
The ABA Client Counseling Competition emphasizes the importance of preventative law and the need to be an effective counselor in the law office. The competition tests the students’ ability to deal with a client’s non-legal goals as well as their legal concerns. Students must probe the client for relevant details while putting the client at ease. Last, teams must analyze the law as applied to the client’s issue and provide a plan of action. The topic of the competition was privacy law, with issues ranging from information asked during an employment interview to gruesome photos of a child killed in a motor vehicle accident that were released by the police and posted on a public website.
Anstett and Borden received high marks from all judges on their professionalism, knowledge of the law, creating rapport with their client, crafting both legal and non-legal solutions and working well together.
This past November the duo won the 2016 Richard T. Bowser Client Counseling Competition at Campbell Law.
