Anstett to receive Public Service Scholar Award

RALEIGH, N.C. – Incoming first-year student Zachary Anstett has been selected to receive the Public Service Scholar Award from Campbell Law School. The award is one of three highly prestigious, full-tuition awards.

The Public Service Scholar Award celebrates Campbell Law’s historic commitment to educating highly competent, deeply compassionate lawyers who seek to serve others through the law. Established prior to the 2014-15 academic year, the scholarship annually recognizes one incoming law student who plans to practice law in service to the public.

“Something that first attracted me to Campbell Law was the longstanding and proven commitment to public service,” said Anstett. “I am very excited to begin my legal education and I truly believe that Campbell Law will put me in a position to make a lasting impact on the community.”

A senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, Anstett has played an integral role in numerous volunteer and service leadership activities. He has served as a co-founder of “Sit Down to Stand Up Against Sexual Assault,” a 12-hour sexual assault awareness event, and helped lead The Safe Haven Program to fight against human trafficking. Anstett has also served as an intern in the Maryland House of Delegates, acted as a Sunday school teacher at Mosaic Christian Church, built homes with Habitat for Humanity, and presented on behalf of Giving Back, Linda’s Legacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the homeless and inspiring others to volunteer. He is a native of Severna Park, Maryland.

An internal public-service, scholarship-selection committee received an overwhelming number of highly competitive applications for the award. It selected and interviewed a pool of nine finalists, and ultimately selected Anstett for the award.

Assistant Professor of Law Lisa Lukasik, who also serves as a State Hearing Review Officer on behalf of the State Board of Education in administrative disputes involving public schools and children with disabilities, led the committee alongside Director of Student Life and Pro Bono Opportunities Beth Froehling. Froehling frequently presents on domestic violence and related issues at area continuing legal education events and is deeply rooted in the non-profit community throughout the state. Campbell Law alumni David Richardson (L ’06) and Anna McLeod (L ’12) also assisted the committee in determining its selection.

“Zack is an exceptional leader with an impeccable academic record and considerable public service experience,” said Lukasik. “Our committee was especially impressed with his genuine passion and infectious enthusiasm about public service, characteristics that have enabled him successfully to bring together diverse groups of people to accomplish critical service objectives for the benefit of his community. We look forward to the great things Zack will accomplish as he joins the Campbell Law community this fall.”
