BUIES CREEK — Capt. Ivan Castro (’03), the only blind officer serving in the U.S. Army Special Forces after losing his sight in Iraq after a mortar blast injured him and killed two fellow soldiers, will speak in Lillington on Sunday for Reps For Vets, an event co-hosted by Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.

Castro, who earned his business degree from Campbell University in 2003, has become an advocate for the rehabilitation, employment and education for wounded warriors since his injury and has participated in various races and marathons across the U.S. In 2012, he was the subject of a feature by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” which detailed his accident, recovery and athletic endeavors over the past decade.

Sunday’s event will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CrossFit007 gym, located at 125 Alexander Drive in Lillington. Castro will welcome the day’s participants on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project, a veterans service organization that offers programs, services and events for wounded veterans across the country. Representatives from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine’s Council of Student Government Presidents and the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine are hosting DO4U’s Reps4Vets event.

CrossFit007 has created a special entry-level fitness workout for all participants of all fitness levels. For more information, contact Sarah Bowman with the School of Osteopathic Medicine at (910) 814-4901.
