Art professor’s self portrait earns first in juried art show

Breck Smith, professor of studio art at Campbell University, earned first place in a nationally juried art show.

The award was handed out at the 14th annual National Juried Exhibition at Marshall University’s School of Art & Design in Huntington, West Virginia, for Smith’s painting, “Self Portrait, Late September 2024.” The juror was painter Rebecca Nass. 

Smith is a native of Natural Bridge, Virginia who received his B.A. in Studio Art from Averett College (now Averett University) in Danville, Virginia. He went on to receive his MFA in Studio Art with a concentration in drawing and painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After graduate school, Smith worked as an exhibit design technician at the North Carolina Zoological Park before coming to Campbell.

Smith has been in higher education for 36 years.
