Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Receives National Appointments

Dr. Brian A. Kessler, DO FACOFP, is the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Kessler received two national appointments this month:  the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) elected him to the ACOFP Board of Governors on March 12, 2015 at the Congress of Delegates meeting prior to the national ACOFP Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he was appointed Chair of the American Osteopathic Association’s Council on Postdoctoral Training (COPT) on March 12, 2015.
“Dr. Kessler has been an invaluable contributor to CUSOM, osteopathic education, and a champion for the profession,” said Dr. John Kauffman, Dean of Campbell’s medical school.  “As a member of the Board of Governors and Chair of COPT, he will work to advance excellence in osteopathic medical education and to advocate for family physicians to be enabled to provide the best primary care.”
Founded in 1950, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians is the national professional organization of more than 20,000 practicing osteopathic family physicians and physicians-in-training. The ACOFP’s mission is to promote excellence in osteopathic family medicine through quality education, visionary leadership and responsible advocacy.  Dr. Kessler is serving a three-year term and will be eligible for re-election in 2018.  He is one of six Governors on the 15-member ACOFP Board that governs the 20,000-member ACOFP.
The American Osteopathic Association’s Council on Postdoctoral Training (AOA COPT) is a representative body composed of members from AOA affiliate organizations created to assure that postdoctoral training programs are operating within approved standards, rules and regulations, and are providing educational training satisfactory to the public interest.  The COPT also has the obligation to deliberate and recommend policy revisions to the Bureau of Osteopathic Education and the AOA Board of Trustees for improvements in postdoctoral education.
Dr. Kessler is a graduate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. He is the former Chief Academic Officer at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital. Dr. Kessler is a board certified family physician who has a vast appreciation of primary care medicine, health policy, and appreciates the vital role primary care physicians have in training the next generation of osteopathic physicians.   Dr. Kessler is an AOA Health Policy Fellow and a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.  He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the North Carolina Osteopathic Medical Association, the North Carolina Society of ACOFP, the Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators, and serves on the AOA Council on Postdoctoral Training.  He is a current executive board member of the North Carolina Osteopathic Medical Association and holds licenses to practice medicine in North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. As Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at Campbell University, Dr. Kessler oversees the Office of Clinical Affairs and clinical education for students.  He is an integral part in the development of osteopathic training programs, research, and community outreach.
