Buies Creek, N.C.—The controversial philosophy of Ayn Rand, author of “Atlas Shrugged,” and “The Fountainhead,” became a powerful influence on 20th century economic and political thought. Dr. Jennifer Burns, assistant professor of history at the University of Virginia and author of the book “Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right,” will examine Rand’s views at a lecture sponsored by the Campbell University Student Government Association, Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Turner Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
Burns’ “Goddess of the Market” is an intellectual biography of Rand based on exclusive access to Rand’s personal papers. It is the only book to draw upon Rand’s unedited letters and journals and has received excellent reviews from major publications such as the “The New York Times,” “Washington Post” and “The Economist,” among others. Burns has also been featured on several television programs, including “The Daily Show” and C-Span’s “Book TV.”
Burns graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and received her master’s and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2010, she was honored as a Distinguished Lecturer by the Organization of American Historians.
