Barnes to address students at upcoming White Coat Ceremony

Campbell University alumna and longtime pharmacy educator will serve as keynote speaker for the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences ceremony on Aug. 21.

Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences will celebrate its newest students in nursing, PA, pharmacy and physical therapy during the 2026 White Coat Ceremony at 2 p.m. on Aug. 21.

The ceremony marks an important milestone as students begin their professional education journey. Receiving a white coat symbolizes the start of that journey and their commitment to compassion, integrity, professionalism and lifelong learning.

Dr. Connie L. Barnes, vice associate dean for Pharmacy and Academic Affairs and professor of pharmacy practice, will serve as the ceremony’s featured speaker. A respected educator, scholar and servant leader, Barnes has devoted more than 35 years to advancing pharmacy education, developing faculty and mentoring future healthcare professionals at Campbell.

Barnes’ connection to Campbell began as a student. She graduated magna cum laude as a member of the charter Doctor of Pharmacy Class of 1990 and went on to complete a Drug Information Residency at the University. Her career has since reflected a deep commitment to the institution, its students and the pharmacy profession.

Throughout her tenure, Barnes has served in numerous leadership positions, including interim associate dean for Academic Affairs, executive vice chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, director and co-director of the Drug Information Center, and residency program director. She has taught across didactic and experiential settings while mentoring generations of student pharmacists and faculty members.

An accomplished scholar, Barnes has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications, book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. She has contributed to multiple editions of Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, secured grants and contracts supporting educational initiatives, and presented her work at regional and national conferences.

Her contributions have been recognized through numerous honors, including Campbell University’s 35-Year Service Award, the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award, Preceptor of the Year and Class Marshal. She also received the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award.

Barnes’ service extends well beyond the classroom. At Campbell, she has chaired the University Grievance Committee and led the CPHS Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee. She has also co-chaired the Admissions Committee and served as a lead for the College of Pharmacy’s Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education self-study.

In the broader community, Barnes served for nine years on the Johnston County Board of Health, including terms as chair and vice chair. She remains active in her church and community through mentorship, outreach and service.

Known for her collaborative leadership and dedication to student success, Barnes brings a fitting perspective to a ceremony centered on professional purpose. Her career demonstrates the lasting influence healthcare professionals can have through education, scholarship, mentorship and service.

As students receive their white coats, they will join a community united by a responsibility to care for others with expertise and compassion. The ceremony will celebrate the beginning of that journey and the promise represented by the next generation of Campbell healthcare professionals.
