Benton honored with Campbell University Distinguished Alumni Award

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shelby Duffy Benton (L ’85) was one of three alums to collect the Campbell University Distinguished Alumni Award this past Friday, Oct. 23, during a banquet as a part of homecoming activities in Buies Creek, N.C. Benton is the current president of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), the first Campbell Law graduate to head the NCBA in this capacity. She served as president-elect of the NCBA in the previous year.

The top university award bestowed upon alumni, the Campbell University Distinguished Alumni Award annually recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their professional careers and in their service to their alma mater.

“I am so proud to be an alumni of Campbell,” said Benton. “Over my 30 year legal career, Campbell has always been there to assist and encourage me. I am deeply honored that the university has chosen to recognize me as a distinguished alumni.”

Benton, who resides in Goldsboro and practices at Benton Family Law, was certified as a family law specialist in 1995. She has previously served the NCBA in a variety of leadership roles, including chairing the Family Law Section in 2009-10 and on the NCBA Board of Governors from 2010-13. She also previously served as a past president of the Wayne County Bar Association and the 8th Judicial District Bar.

Active in the community, Benton’s activities include serving on the Salvation Army advisory board and as the chair of Deacons at First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro. She is also co-founder and past-president of the youth volleyball organization Wayne Area Volleyball Enthusiasts (WAVE), chair of the Wayne County Criminal Justice Partnership Advisory Board, the Carver Elementary School Advisory Board, and the Spring Creek High School Advisory Board. Benton was a Girl Scout troop leader from 1992-97.

Benton has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the NCBA’s 2012 Citizen Lawyer Award and the 2012 Litigation Practitioner Award at the Women of Justice awards.
