Big South returns to Campbell this week

BUIES CREEK – The Big South Conference will return to Buies Creek this week when the men’s and women’s soccer teams host their conference home openers after 17 years away from the conference they helped create in 1983.

The men’s team will host Radford at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the women’s squad will host Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Thursday. Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander will be in attendance for both games to mark the occasion, and the University’s marketing department will hand out 100 T-shirts both nights and is encouraging all fans to participate in a “white out” with white shirts.

Campbell officially returned to the Big South on July 1, realigning with a league of which it was a charter member from 1983-94. The Fighting Camel program’s return pushes membership to 11 institutions for the first time in league history.

Campbell has 20 varsity sports at the Division I level, 17 of which are sponsored by the Big South. Both Campbell and the Big South Conference will begin sponsoring women’s lacrosse in 2012-13.   

Big South members are Charleston Southern University (S.C.), Coastal Carolina University (Conway, S.C.), Gardner-Webb University (Boiling Spring.), High Point University, Liberty University (Lynchburg, Va.), UNC Asheville, Presbyterian College (Clinton, S.C.), Radford University (Va.), Virginia Military Institute (Lexington, Va.) and Winthrop University (Rock Hill, S.C.).Campbell’s volleyball team was the first to take part in Big South play on Friday when it defeated High Point University 3-0 in High Point. The Lady Camels will play two more conference road games before hosting Radford on Oct. 7 at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
