Dr. Bruce Blackmon, a longtime resident of Buies Creek, N.C., was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Campbell University during the university’s Homecoming events on Oct. 21. Blackmon graduated from Campbell Junior College in 1940 and spent his professional career serving the Buies Creek community as both a family physician and director of Health Services for Campbell. After earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from N.C. State College, Blackmon graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1951. He completed a residency in Wilmington, N.C. and returned to Buies Creek to practice family medicine and become director of Health Services for Campbell. He retired from the Campbell staff in 1974. Blackmon is a charter member of the Buies Creek Volunteer Fire Department and currently serves as a member of the department’s board of directors. Active in numerous professional organizations at both county and state levels, Blackmon is also a patron of the arts and was a driving force behind the establishment of the Cape Fear Friends of the Fine Arts—an organization dedicated to promoting interest in and appreciation of the arts through a wide variety of programming. In addition, he is a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church of Buies Creek and a former member of the North Carolina Baptist Foundation Board of Directors. He is married to the former Lelia Lawrence. They are the parents of five children, two of whom are also Campbell graduates.
