Buies Creek, N.C.-Campbell University senior, Hannah Bowen, has received the Gore Center for Servant Leadership Award from Campbell University’s School of Education. A Social Work major, Bowen received the honor for her contributions to the public good through service oriented internships and extracurricular activities.
In 2006, Bowen interned with a nonprofit youth organization, Think Smart Outreach Center, helping to ensure Harnett County youth and their families access to learning resource programs. Another internship with the Lee County Schools placed Bowen in the role of school counselor in which she guided and advised students about life choices.
“Through this internship I was able to connect with kids, go on home visits and organize small groups for female students that give positive feedback,” she said of her training with the Lee County Schools. “The most amazing thing has been to see how much a little care and concern can make a big change in a student’s life.”
Hannah Bowen graduated with honors from South Johnston High School in 2005, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Future Farmers of America and Future Teachers of America organizations. From 2003 to 2005, she helped build homes, minister to those in need and reached out to the homeless through mission trips to Costa Rica, Mexico and Atlanta, Ga. She is an active member of the Campbell University Social Work Club, serving as president and vice president and participating in service projects such as donating to needy families, sponsoring disadvantaged children and helping to raise awareness for domestic violence.
The purpose of the Gore Center for Servant Leadership is to challenge students and faculty to accept the call to servant leadership through recognition, support and encouragement. The Center is named for two of the University’s most prominent alumni and benefactors, Edward Mannon Gore, Sr. and Dinah Eubanks Gore. A 1952 graduate of Campbell College, Mr. Gore currently serves as a member of the Campbell University Board of Trustees and as chairman of the Campbell University Foundation. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gore were given the Honorary Doctor of Laws for their distinguished professional accomplishments and outstanding civic contributions at the Campbell commencement ceremony in May 2007. The Gores are generous supporters of Campbell University, including funding the Convocation Center Arena in memory of their son, Gilbert Craig Gore and the University Chapel’s Bell Tower and Prayer Room in honor of the Gore family.
