Tina Bullard, a pharmacist with Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, N.C., was named Campbell University’s Roche Pharmaceutics Preceptor of the Year. Bullard is pharmacy supervisor for Woodhaven Nursing Home and the Gibson Cancer Center in Lumberton. The Preceptor of the Year award recognizes the mentoring efforts and outstanding contributions of a preceptor (instructor/supervisor) to the educational development of future pharmacists. The recipient must demonstrate high standards of professionalism, ethics and clinical practice. A 1981 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, Bullard served as preceptor for approximately 12 fourth-year Campbell pharmacy students over the past 18 months for a required geriatric medicine rotation. “The Preceptor of the Year award is based entirely on student evaluations,” said Dr. Valerie Clinard, director of Experiential Programs at Campbell’s School of Pharmacy. “It demonstrates dedication to the practice of pharmacy and is one of the most coveted awards a preceptor can receive.” Bullard, who claims she learns as much from her students as they learn from her, spends an inordinate amount of time making sure the students’ rotations are full of challenges and contain learning experiences that will benefit them when they leave. “I like to show students how to incorporate care and compassion into their practice,” she said. “I find them to be some of the most important elements of clinical practice.” The experiential component of Campbell’s pharmacy curriculum consists of a Clinical Skills Development Course and participation in a community health screening in the first year, early practice experiences in the summers between the first and second academic years, and advanced practice experiences in the fourth professional year. Among other objectives, the program provides practical experience in the operation and management of a community or hospital pharmacy and/or drug distribution system and introduces students to advanced patient care skills.Photo Copy: From left, Tina Bullard, pharmacy supervisor for Woodhaven Nursing Home and the Gibson Cancer Center in Lumberton, receives Campbell University’s Roche Pharmaceutics Preceptor of the Year award from Dr. Valerie Clinard, director of Experiential Programs at the Campbell School of Pharmacy.
