Business School recaps ‘First Thursday’ presentation on global supply chain crisis

Dr. Sal Mercogliano, chair of the Department of History, Criminal Justice and Political Science at Campbell University, teamed up with the Lundy-Fetterman School of  Business on April 7 to lead a presentation about the current supply chain situation the U.S. is facing.

The talk was part of the “First Thursdays with Campbell” initiative, a monthly professional development opportunity offered to current students, alumni, and community members. The session gave an overview of the history of cargo shipping and the current state of the industry and provided explanation on the “why” behind the stress that our supply chain is currently experiencing.

Mercogliano highlighted various headline topics and provided insight on how these events have affected the United States economy and US consumers alike — all in a way that was interesting and readily understandable by all.

Mercogliano has extensive experience and knowledge in maritime history and policy. He received a BS in Marine Transportation at SUNY Maritime College. After graduation, he sailed and worked in the US merchant marine for seven years before changing course and embarking on a career in academia. He earned an MA in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology at East Carolina University and a PhD in Naval and Military History at the University of Alabama.

Now, alongside his tenured career as a professor, he is a contributor to gCaptain and Freightwaves on shipping policy, is a trustee of the National Maritime Historical Society and is vice president of the North American Society for Oceanic History. Mercogliano also hosts his own YouTube Channel — What’s Going on with Shipping — which has more than 40,000 subscribers.
