BUIES CREEK — The Campbell University Alumni Association and its Board of Directors recognized four alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Award Friday, Oct. 21, at the annual Homecoming Week banquet:
- Todd Allen Jones ’98, attorney and managing partner at Anderson Jones, PLLC;
- David Powell Nanney Jr. ’85, attorney and CPA at Kirschbaum, Nanney, Keenan, & Griffin, PA;
- Donna Sutton Stroud ’85, ’88, judge on the NC Court of Appeals; and
- William T. Symonds ’91, senior vice president of clinical research at Roivant Sciences, Inc & director of Arbutus Biopharma Corp.
Todd Allen Jones ’98
Todd Allen Jones, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is an attorney and managing partner at the law firm Anderson Jones, PLLC, who has experience in construction law and litigation, collections, OSHA defense, contracts, local government and municipal law, administrative law and litigation, real estate, employment law, immigration law, and traffic violations.
He’s an active volunteer with the North Carolina Bar Association’s Construction Law section and currently serves as board chair of the Downtown Housing Improvement Corp. He also serves on the Construction Financial Managers Association’s National Government Affairs Committee and the Associated Builders and Contractors’ Fayetteville council.
A 1998 graduate of the Campbell University Law Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, he’s chair of the Campbell Law Alumni Association Board of Directors.
The Durham, North Carolina, native completed a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993. He and his wife, Kimberly Brackett-Jones, have two children: Carter and Taylor.
David Powell Nanney Jr. ’85
David Powell Nanney Jr., of Raleigh, North Carolina, is an attorney and CPA at Kirschbaum, Nanney, Keenan, & Griffin, PA, who specializes in tax and estate planning. He’s also chair of the Charles & Irene Nanney Foundation Board of Trustees.
A 1985 cum laude graduate of the Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, Nanney is a member of the North Carolina and South Carolina State Bars. The Gastonia, North Carolina, native, earned his undergraduate degree in accounting, with a specialization in tax, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1980.
He is licensed to practice before the North Carolina and South Carolina districts of the U.S. District Courts, as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit, U.S. Tax Court, and U.S. Supreme Court. He was named to the 2017 North Carolina Super Lawyers list.
He and his wife, Priscilla Justis, have three children: David, Lee, and Katherine.
Donna Sutton Stroud ’85, ’88
Donna Sutton Stroud, of Garner, North Carolina, is a two-time graduate of Campbell University and a judge who was first elected to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2006. She has also served as an adjunct professor with the Campbell University Norma Adrian Wiggins School of Law since 2008. Previously, she was a judge with the Wake County District Court. Other activities during her career include serving as judicial division chair of the N.C. Association of Women Attorneys and serving on the Dispute Resolution Commission, N.C. Courts Commission, Governor’s Task Force on Mental Health and Substance Use, and N.C. Bar Association’s Appellate Rules and Women in the Profession committees.
A native of Kinston, North Carolina, Stroud graduated summa cum laude from Campbell in 1985 with a bachelor’s in government and magna cum laude from Campbell Law in 1988. She also completed a L.L.M. in judicial studies at Duke University.
She was named Campbell’s Distinguished Political Science Alumna in 2015 and received the General Federation of Women’s Club of North Carolina’s Women of Achievement Award in 2014.
She and her husband, J. Wilson Stroud, have two children: Aaron and Isaac.
William T. Symonds ’91
William T. Symonds, Pharm.D., of Cary, North Carolina, has served as the senior vice president of clinical research at Roivant Sciences, Inc. since 2014. He also serves as a director of Arbutus Biopharma Corp., which focuses on developing a cure for chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Previously, he served as vice president of the Liver Disease Therapeutic Area at Gilead Sciences, Inc. from 2012 to 2014, and as senior vice president of clinical pharmacology and translational medicine at Pharmasset, Inc. from 2007 to 2012. Before that he worked at GlaxoSmithKline for nearly 15 years and rose to become director of antiviral clinical pharmacology and discovery medicine.
He’s a 1991 Doctor of Pharmacy graduate of Campbell University, where he serves on the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences’ Dean’s Board of Advisors.
The Euclid, Ohio, native studied pre-pharmacy at the University of Tennessee and completed a fellowship in clinical pharmacokinetics at the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Laboratory in Buffalo, New York.
He and his wife, Melissa Lewis, have two children: Meghan and Allison, a pharmacy student at Campbell.
