BUIES CREEK — 2LT John Arroyo, a recent graduate of Campbell University’s Fort Bragg campus, was one of the victims of the shooting at the Fort Hood military installation April 2.
Arroyo, a 2013 Campbell graduate, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and underwent surgery in Texas. He is doing well and recovering with his family in Texas. Three servicemembers were killed, and Arroyo was among 16 who were injured in the attack.
Arroyo was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army on May 11, 2013, after serving many years as an enlisted non-commissioned officer. He completed the ROTC program at Campbell and was one of the most successful cadets in university history. He was the cadet battalion commander for his ROTC class and a distinguished graduate. He graduated summa cum laude and is an active member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society.
Arroyo is an active member of Campbell’s extended programs, and is loved and fondly remembered by the campus community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with John and the Arroyo family,” said John Roberson, dean of Campbell’s extended programs, including the Fort Bragg campus. “We wish him success in his recovery.”
