Buies Creek, N.C.-Campbell University students were given the opportunity to meet with representatives from 27 social agencies in a three-county area at the recent Human Services Fair, sponsored by the university’s department of Social Work. The event was held on Wednesday, April 1, in the Rumley Center on the Campbell campus.
Organized and implemented by students in the Social Work Practice Methods II class, the Human Services Fair not only represents a learning opportunity for students, but a chance to establish valuable relationships with potential employers. The entire student body was invited to participate in the fair.
“This is a tremendous networking opportunity,” said Dr. Eugene Sumner, Field Coordinator for Campbell’s Social Work program, “We also have observed that many social workers and social agency staff use the fair as an opportunity to network with each other.”
The fair covered a variety of human services and featured agencies from Johnston, Harnett and Wake counties. Some of the organizations represented were the Salvation Army of Raleigh, Smithfield and Dunn; the Harnett County department of Social Services; Falcon Children’s Home; Harnett County Nutritional Services, the Police Athletic League of Dunn; Meals on Wheels of Wake County, the Raleigh Police Department; the office of Congressman Bob Etheridge; Teens as Parents of Harnett County; Safe of Harnett County and Hospice of Harnett County.
“The Human Services Fair enables our students to develop skills important to the practice of social work,” said Sumner. “It also helps them to gain professional knowledge and acquaints them with the mission of all social services-to act as a change agent for individuals, groups or organizations in a community.”
