KUALA LUMPUR – The first time is the sweetest.
On Sunday, Malaysian golfer Michelle Koh tasted her first professional victory by emerging triumphant in the CTBC Shanghai Ladies Classic at the Tianma Country Club in China.
And it was a special occasion for Michelle as her father Ricky Koh Hock Huat was the caddie.
The 24-year-old Michelle sizzled with a bogey-free six-under 66 for a two-stroke win. She finished with a three-day total of 10-under 206 to become the first Malaysian to win on the China LPGA Tour. The win was worth RMB120,000 (RM72,699) for Michelle.
Overnight leader Cheng Ssu-chia of Taiwan could only manage a 72 to finish second on 208.
China's Yan Panpan, Pan Yanhong and Ye Ziqi finished joint third with South Korean Jang So-young and Titiya Plucksataporn of Thailand on 209.
Michelle, who turned professional in March last year, was overjoyed with the breakthrough win.
“This is a memorable win. Coming from four shots back to win is truly memorable for me,” said Michelle.
“But what makes it more memorable is that I got to celebrate it with my dad. It's also an early celebration for his 60th birthday on July 8.
“He has been a pillar of strength for me as well as an awesome caddie.
“Winning my first pro title was not easy. I stayed focused from the start to the end. I felt quite nervous in the last two holes, but I managed to hang on.
“It is a good start for me and I am looking forward to a very exciting year ahead,” added Michelle, who will next compete in back-to-back tournaments in Taiwan and China.
Note: Koh was a All-Big South Conference and all-region performer in 2012 as a senior when she tied for 10th at the NCAA East Regional.
