Campbell Business celebrates alumni, honors Rice and Schaffernoth

Campbell University 2016 Winter Commencement

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell Business School honored and celebrated alumni while hosting a panel of graduates to engage with students during its 2016 Alumni Celebration Day on Oct. 21 as a part of homecoming festivities. Kristin Rice received the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumna Award while Andrew Schaffernoth was named the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumnus.

In addition to being honored Rice and Schaffernoth accompanied fellow alums Tom Jacobs and Sarah Kroll in a panel discussion. The panel allowed current students to hear from alumni across different eras, from different majors, working in different industries that had taken different paths to their current positions.

“Tom, Sarah, Kristin and Andrew are each tremendous leaders, examples for our students and representatives for our university,” said Campbell Business Dean Dr. Kevin O’Mara. “We appreciate their willingness to return to campus and engage with our students. It is my hope that our students could see themselves in the position of one or more of our panelists as they continue to grow, learn and prepare for successful careers in business and industry.”

Jacobs works with a broad and diverse group of corporate brands in helping with solutions to specific marketing challenges through sports sponsorships and event marketing. He co‐founded Activent Marketing in 2008 which is working with Kia Motors, PUMA, Nature’s Bounty, The Big Ten Network and Popchips. Prior to co‐founding Activent he spent 10 years in Chicago and 8 years in Pittsburgh working for large global advertising agencies. As vice president of sports and event marketing at two agencies, he led teams that developed marketing campaigns for Procter & Gamble’s Old Spice, Sanofi‐Aventis, Aetna, Kraft Foods, Pennzoil, Valspar Paint and many other national and global brands. Throughout his career he has strategically identified sponsorship opportunities for brands, negotiated sponsorship agreements and created powerful event marketing campaigns around professional sports and entertainment properties. These marketing campaigns have won national and international marketing awards such as Effie Awards and CLIO Awards. Before entering the world of marketing, he graduated cum laude from Campbell University in 1993.

Kroll graduated from Campbell Business in December 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in healthcare management. During her time as a student she was on the executive board of the healthcare management club, a member of the 2013 Dean’s council and an active sister in Sigma Alpha Omega. Kroll knew she chose the right career path when she completed an internship during her junior year at The Davis Community, a continuing care retirement community located in Wilmington, NC. Through this internship, healthcare management turned from a career path to a passion. In October 2014 she was hired as a senior client engagement coordinator for Quintiles Transitional and worked there until she transitioned roles to DPT clinical coordinator for Campbell University’s Physical Therapy Program.

Rice is an attorney with the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks (NCCOB) where she advises the commissioner and his staff on matters related to North Carolina chartered or licensed financial institutions. She began her career at NCCOB in 2014 as a trust examiner, and she obtained the designation of Certified Trust Examiner from the Conference of State Bank Supervisors. Prior to her roles in state government, she worked in private practice in the areas of estate planning and administration, bankruptcy and tax law. She also worked as a trust relationship officer for US Trust. Rice received her BBA in Trust and Wealth Management and MBA with a Finance concentration from Campbell University in 2008. She received her juris doctor from Elon University in 2012 and is licensed to practice law in North Carolina.

Schaffernoth is a 1987 graduate of the Campbell University Trust and Wealth Management program. He began his career with First Union National Bank initially in the trust tax area then serving numerous years as a trust officer in the institutional trust group working with qualified and non‐qualified retirement programs. In the institutional trust group he had the opportunity to work closely with the investment side of the business; discovering his passion for portfolio management and changing the trajectory of his career. In 2002, he took a personal risk and created his own entrepreneurial venture, which specialized in assisting boutique investment firms with asset acquisition, development and growth. One of his initial clients, Alta Capital Management, was a $250 million regional registered investment advisory firm with significant untapped potential. Schaffernoth purchased a minor ownership stake in Alta Capital in2006 and has helped the firm grow to a nationally recognized investment firm with more than $3 billion in assets under management and numerous investment awards. His current role as principal includes leading the firm’s distribution and marketing efforts, evaluating portfolio and performance analytics and serving as a sitting member of Alta’s investment committee.
