BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell Business will partner with the North Carolina Council on Economic Education to hold a full-day workshop on poverty on Friday, March 11 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The day-long exercise will include a screening of the documentary “Living on One.” The workshop is free for interested participants, but registration is encouraged.
“We are delighted to co-host the second-annual “Teaching the Teachers” workshop series on our campus,” said Campbell Business Associate Dean for External Relations Dr. Shahriar Mostashari. “Our goal is to foster the fundamentals of economic education and financial literacy among middle and high school teachers. In addition to presenting the basic economic and finance concepts, “Living on One” exposes the workshop participants to the lives of families living in extreme poverty and the success of microfinance loans as a plausible anti-poverty remedy.”
“Living on One” is a documentary that focuses on the realization of extreme poverty and inequality. The workshop will break the film down into eight segments, pairing each with lessons that can be presented to middle and high school students. During the workshop, participants will learn how to present topics such as scarcity, human capital, extreme budgeting, and entrepreneurship to others. The film presents an ideal opportunity for project-based learning and will conclude with multiple ways to challenge students.
Teachers that attend the workshop will receive:
*Discussion questions ideal for middle, high school and advanced level students
*Access to all eight segments and ideas on pairing lessons
*Lesson demonstrations focusing on scarcity, the importance of investing in our human capital, extreme budgeting and entrepreneurship
*Project ideas for students
