Campbell University 2016 Winter Commencement

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell Business School will host two officials from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for five different info sessions. The officials are based out of the SEC’s Atlanta Regional Office, which is undertaking a campaign to protect investors by helping them prevent and avoid investment fraud.

All students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community are welcome to attend any of the sessions, which mark the first visit of SEC officials to Campbell Business. A complete schedule of all five info sessions is listed at the bottom of this release. SEC administrative officer Michael A. Ashmore, Ph.D. and examiner Mark Wszolek will lead the sessions.

The SEC is particularly concerned with affinity fraud, which includes investment frauds that prey upon members of identifiable groups, language minorities, and/or professional groups. These scams exploit the trust and friendship that exist in groups of people who have something in common. Many affinity scams involve Ponzi and pyramid schemes, where new investor money is used to make payments to earlier investors to give the illustration that the investment is successful.

Topics that will be discussed throughout the info sessions include saving and investing, mutual funds, and variable annuities. Ashmore and Wszolek will also take questions regarding saving, investing, avoiding fraud, and how to research all investments prior to purchase.

Info Session Schedule:
9-10 a.m. – Lynch Auditorium
10-11 a.m. – Room 126
11 a.m. to noon – Lynch Auditorium
1:30-3 p.m. – First Citizens Wealth Management Center
