Campbell Celebrates Spring Fling

The warm weather has returned, the birds are chirping and the flowers are in bloom. Spring is here and so is Spring Fling Week, March 24-31, at Campbell University.The annual Spring Fling week, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, gives students an opportunity to take a break from the books and enjoy some fellowship and fun through a variety of activities.”It gives students a chance to meet different people and to get involved on campus,” said Taryn McMahon, CAB’s chair of the Spring Fling activities. “It’s an opportunity to come out and have some fun.”The week officially kicked off Saturday, Mar. 24, with the Battle of the Bands competition. The winner of the contest, Fayetteville rock group Steadfast, will open the April 13 concert for Christian music favorites Switchfoot.Monday, students participated in a “Las Vegas” game night. Proceeds from the entrance fee will be donated to the Relay for Life charity.The annual Mr. Campbell contest is also getting a fresh update. This year’s contest will feature a “Battle of the Sexes” theme, as male and female students compete in a variety of challenges.”We had a lot of girls complain that they couldn’t participate,” said Chris O’Connor, Director of Student Activities. “We wanted to come up with something guys and girls could do, to make sure we weren’t leaving anyone out. We also wanted to try something a little different and keep things fresh.”Other events include the Spring Carnival, an outdoor movie, and the CAB Video Music Awards.The week also provides an opportunity for Campbell students, faculty, staff and alumni to serve the community, with Friday’s Relay for Life walk in the Academic Circle from 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. Relay for Life is the signature overnight fundraising event of the American Cancer Society.
