Buies Creek—The Campbell University chapter of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) has gained the status of “Recognized Student Society” by the national organization. Chapter advisor Dr. Melanie Pound, assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice at Campbell, said the recognition is no small accomplishment.“There are several criteria that have to be met before a student chapter can be recognized by the national association,” Pound said. “The chapter must promote membership in local state and national health-system organizations, develop activities to stimulate interest in health-system pharmacy careers and complete one or more professional development projects that encourage career and professional development.”These criteria are required annually to maintain “Recognized Student Society” status, Pound added. In order to meet the criteria, the approximately 40-member Campbell ASHP chapter invited several pharmacy professionals to speak at scheduled meetings; held a therapeutic knowledge and skills competition in which students are given a hypothetical patient’s case and must identify problems and recommend treatments; and set up a booth at the School of Pharmacy’s annual Health Fair to disseminate information about health care issues such as poison prevention, diabetes care monitoring and keeping children safe.“I’m very proud of the ASHP group that we have here at Campbell,” Pound said. “They’ve worked very hard to get this very well deserved reward.”As a result of being recognized by the national association, the chapter will receive a recognition certificate, additional awards for incoming and outgoing presidents, a complimentary ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting student registration and a complimentary ASHP publication.
