The Campbell University Choral Society will perform sacred works of 20th century composers John Rutter and Halsey Stevens on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the Rogers Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.”The program, titled ‘Magnificat,’ is taken from the Latin setting of the traditional New Testament Song of Mary, the Magnificat text,” said Choral Director Dr. Phillip Morrow “Historically this has been a favorite text for musical settings by composers.”Born in London in 1945, John Rutter’s compositional career includes large and small-scale choral works, orchestral and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children’s operas, music for television and compositions for groups such as Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers. His larger choral works, “Requiem,” “Magnificat” and “Pslamfest,” have been performed throughout Britain and North America.American composer Halsey Stevens, who was born in Scott, N.Y., in 1908, wrote extensively for orchestra, chamber groups, keyboard and chorus. His music has been played widely throughout the United States and in more than 30 countries.”Rutters piece is a full-blown, 40-minute work featuring a full chamber orchestra, while Steven’s piece is a much shorter and starker rendition for trumpet and choir,” Morrow added. In addition, the concert will feature mezzo-soprano soloist Susan Morrow and trumpet soloist Dennis de Jong.
