Campbell Divinity School co-sponsors Segue youth choir event Feb. 8

BUIES CREEK — More than 200 church youth from across the state will lead a concert on Feb. 8 at the conclusion of Segue, a one-day youth choir gathering of interaction and inspiration. The event, open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Campbell University Divinity School and Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, who is hosting the event at 6:30 p.m.

“We hear of churches throughout our region who need help initiating or reviving a youth choir ministry,” said Larry Dickens, Duncan Chair of Church Music at the Divinity School and creator of the festival two years ago. “This event provides the energy and insight needed to help choirs ‘segue’ to the next level of performance and participation.”

The festival seeks not only to involve teenagers musically, but also relationally and spiritually.

This year’s Segue festival will involve eight choirs from across the state from several different denominations. Each year an “honor choir” is selected to perform a featured part of the concert to showcase what is possible for youth choirs to accomplish. This year’s honor choir is CrossFlame from St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Hickory, N.C., directed by Ron Sinclair.

The past two Segue youth choir festivals have been held at New Hope Baptist Church (2011) and Butler Chapel at Campbell University (2013). Snyder Youth Choir (SMBC) and the youth choir of First Baptist Church of Southern Pines, N.C., have been featured as the honor choirs.
